My Journey to the Branch

My name is Brynn Johnson. I am a dedicated mother of 2 beautiful boys named Damian and Christopher. I have been married to my husband Jeff for almost 15 years.  My journey to become a birth doula is one I never imagined I would have never gone on.

The year was 2016. I had decided to go back to school to finish my Associate in Arts degree at my local community college. I needed to take a science class, but wasn't interested in any chemistry, physics or astronomy. I decided to take a class called Biology of Women. Little did I know that this class was going to change my life so much.

One class period, we had a doula come talk to the class about what a doula was. I had never heard of a doula before. I sat and scribbled some notes down for what I thought was only going to be used for an assignment. As I looked through my notes, it piqued my interest about the world of doula work. I have a strong human services background and I wanted to find an "out of the box" way to practice human services. Then the light bulb went off in my head.

Over Christmas break that year, I did research into what is involved to become a doula. I looked into training through DONA International and decided that was the route I wanted to take. I jumped in with excitement and a few nerves about the journey I was about to begin. I also have reached out to other local birth professionals in the area for advice and guidance. I was quite surprised to see how many other birth related professionals there are. I am also an active member of The Lake Superior Birth Collective.

My goal is to help families and moms have the best birth experience possible. That's my place on the branch; observe and give support when needed the most in any way I can.

That's my doula story. Let's work together to tell your birth story!

My Philosophy

Every mom deserves to have care and support during their birth experience.

Every birth is an unique experience and should be treated as such.

I will support every mother during labor, delivery and postpartum and ensure she has the information to make informed decisions about her care.
